Real money betting on Call of Duty World League games is becoming more available on the eSports betting market, with bookmakers bet365 and Paddy Power now offering prices on CWL matches. Markets on offer by these two bookmakers are currently limited to the traditional match winner 2-way market, but additional “specific condition” markets (i.e. total score, team with the most kills at the end of the series, etc) may soon become available as well.
Although Call of Duty World League betting is on offer from these two bookmakers, its betting scene is still in its infancy and will likely be so for a while. Its small reach in the eSports betting space may be due in large part to American laws on online sports betting, which deems the activity illegal in the country. Federal law (specifically the Interstate Wire Act/Federal Wire Act of 1961) states that it is illegal for a website to take sports bets from users. The majority of CoD’s viewership is from the US, which explains the rather modest support for the title in online eSports betting to date.
Should online sports betting laws change in the United States within the next couple of years, Call of Duty will likely become one of the top titles to bet on in that region given the game’s popularity in North America — alongside other favourites such as League of Legends and Dota 2. The Federal Wire Act was actually changed slightly back in September 2011, when the US Department of Justice ruled that taking in online bets was not illegal outside of sports betting, so who knows what the future may hold for CoD betting.
As of the time of this writing, both bookmakers have match winner prices for the upcoming NA CWL matches, which users can bet on right away. Other matches such as those found on weekend tournaments will also likely be offered in the future.
